Bio
A Dutch master, Rembrandt van Rijn, is known for his portraits, religious scenes, and unmatched skill in etching. Born in Leiden, he left university to study painting and drawing, and was inspired by Caravaggio and Italian masters. After gaining prominence in his hometown, he moved to Amsterdam in 1631, where he became the leading portraitist of his time and married Saskia van Uylenburgh, who often modeled for his work. Known for dramatic lighting and emotional depth, Rembrandt produced around 600 paintings, 300 etchings, and 1,400 drawings, including many self-portraits. Despite his fame, he faced personal tragedy and financial hardship later in life, but his legacy endures as one of the most innovative and expressive artists in Western art history.
