Marc
Chagall

1887–1985

“Despite all the troubles of our world, I have never abandoned in my heart the love in which I was brought up, or the hope of man in love. In life, as on the artist's palette, there is only one color that gives meaning to life and art: the color of love.”

Bio

Born in Vitebsk, Russia into a working-class family, Chagall knew he was destined for great things. “I had to find some special occupation, some kind of work that would not force me to turn away from the sky and the stars, that would allow me to discover the meaning of life,” he once wrote. Chagall was celebrated for his dreamlike, color-rich compositions that defied modernist trends in favor of a deeply personal, poetic vision. After moving to Paris in 1910 and connecting with avant-garde figures like Picasso and Apollinaire, Chagall returned briefly to Russia during WWI before ultimately fleeing Nazi-occupied Europe for New York. Following his wife Bella’s death, he resumed painting and later completed major commissions for institutions like the Paris Opera House and Lincoln Center. A master of fantasy and emotion, Chagall remained fiercely individualistic, creating a legacy defined by romance, memory, and imagination.
