Jules
Cheret

1836 – 1932

“He creates posters which, assembled together, form the most interesting monument there can be to the Parisian chronicle against a backdrop of industrial activity.”

– ‘un Bourgeois de Paris’ from Figaro Illustré

Bio

Chéret was a pioneering French artist and lithographer often called the "father of the modern poster." Born into a modest family in Paris, he began his artistic training early, apprenticing with a lithographer and later studying at the École Nationale de Dessin. Influenced by British design during his time in London, Chéret returned to France and transformed advertising through vibrant, Rococo-inspired posters for cabarets, theaters, and commercial products. His innovative approach elevated posters to an art form, and his popularity led to commissions across industries, from entertainment and festivals to cosmetics, beverages, and transportation.
