FERMIN
CASTRO

B. 1965

“Sculpture originated as a primal representation of language, in which form and volume were manifested in this genuine act of human expression.”

Bio

Fermin Castro is an emerging self-taught artist whose abstract sculptures evoke both reverie and mysticism, often conveying his own vision of evolution. His sculptures depict images conceived in abstract-figurative forms, transcending imagination and awakening fantasy. His art is influenced by his Caribbean roots, drawing inspiration from Cuban and Afro-Cuban sculptors and painters, blending primitive and modern Latin American elements with contemporary European artistic expressions.

Castro was born and raised in Havana, Cuba, where he graduated from the University of Havana with a degree in chemistry. He always had a passion for art, but it wasn’t until 2017 that he formally began his artistic career, pursuing his lifelong dream of sculpting. He sculpts wood from a wide range of geographic areas, but most often creates his sculptures from the wood of local fallen trees, purchases from small landowners, and reclaimed materials. Using both the wood's texture and color, Castro reinterprets Cuban stories, legends, and marine life, creating imaginative forms that invite viewers to discover an unexpected sense of harmony.
