“I paint things as they are, I don't comment, I record.””

Bio

Through his bold depictions of cabarets, dancers, and street scenes Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec revolutionized the portrayal of Parisian nightlife, blending the realism of the Barbizon school with Impressionist influences. A master lithographer, Lautrec captured raw human emotion and social realities, often through recurring models like Carmen Gaudin. His keen psychological insight stemmed from a difficult childhood marked by illness and emotional distance. Despite dying at just 36 from complications of pycnodysostosis, he left behind a prolific legacy of over 500 paintings, 5,000 drawings, and 350 lithographs that helped usher in the modern era of art.
