“Chaos in nature is immediately challenging and forces a good artist to impose some type of order on his or her perception of a site.”
Bio
Wolf Kahn was a German-born American artist celebrated for his vibrant landscapes that merged realism with the expressive color and abstraction of Color Field painting. After immigrating to the U.S. during the Holocaust, he studied under Hans Hofmann and became known for blending Hofmann’s modernist teachings with influences from Matisse, Rothko, and American Impressionism. His work, marked by luminous color and atmospheric depth, reflects a lifelong exploration of landscape through both discipline and spontaneity. Kahn painted extensively around the world but found enduring inspiration in Vermont, where he spent summers on his farm with his wife, artist Emily Mason.
