Bio
Born in Brooklyn in 1926, Boxer was a relentless experimenter across painting, printmaking, drawing, and sculpture. After serving in WWII, he studied at the Art Students League and was later labeled a “color-field” painter by critic Clement Greenberg—though Boxer himself preferred the term “visionless,” emphasizing the unfolding of form and process over rigid style. His textured, abstract works—often built through repeated gestures—have been acquired by major institutions including MoMA, the Met, and the Whitney; he received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1975.
