“People ask me, 'Don't you ever run out of ideas?' Well, on the first place, I don't use ideas. Every time I have an idea, it's too limiting and usually turns out to be a disappointment. But I haven't run out of curiosity.”

Bio

Robert Rauschenberg was a groundbreaking American artist whose six-decade career spanned painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, and performance. Emerging during the height of Abstract Expressionism, he challenged its ideals through innovative works like his Combines (1954–64), which merged everyday objects with traditional materials, blurring the boundaries between art and life. A student at Black Mountain College, he was deeply influenced by teachers and collaborators like Josef Albers, John Cage, and Merce Cunningham, with whom he worked on over twenty dance projects. His partnership with Jasper Johns pushed both artists toward incorporating mass media imagery and objects into fine art. Rauschenberg’s inventive use of photography and printmaking, particularly in works like his Dante’s Inferno series, reflects a lifelong fascination with transforming the visual language of modern media.
