“Clay is a magic material. It’s a mystery. Rodin saw it for himself when he came upon clay, that this was like an epiphany. It was this transformation, this fire that occurred. Everything that you are and you intend comes through and it’s still a mystery to me how what I feel evidences itself in what I have made.”

Bio

Immersed in sculpture from childhood under the guidance of her father, Yale professor George Holburn Snowden, M.L. Snowden carries on a legacy linked to Rodin through the sculpting tools passed down three generations. A highly awarded artist, she received the National Sculpture Society’s Lifetime Achievement Grant and the prestigious International Rodin Competition Special Grand Prize. Since 1989, her work has focused on the geological theme “Tectonics,” humanizing natural forces to make abstract Earth sciences intuitively understandable, while also reflecting on humanity’s role and universal truths shared by all creation.
