Emily
Mason

1932 – 2019

“My work, while never a depiction of nature, is analogous in its process to the workings of nature and, in its result, aims for the beauty of the interior of a great storm or a day lily.”

Bio

Known for her vibrant, emotive use of color and experimental techniques, Emily Mason was a celebrated American Abstract Expressionist painter. Born in New York City into a family of artists, including her mother Alice Trumbull Mason and ancestor John Trumbull, she studied at Bennington College, Cooper Union, and later in Venice on a Fulbright grant. There, she developed her signature approach by experimenting with paint transfer techniques. Mason went on to exhibit widely from her first solo show in 1960, taught painting at Hunter College for over 25 years, and built a lasting legacy through her dynamic, color-driven canvases that convey both texture and emotional depth.

Stay tuned for new arrivals, great things are coming!
