Donald
Sultan

b. 1951

“I try to pare down the images to their essence, and capture the fleeting aspect of reality by pitting the gesture against the geometric—the gesture being the fluidity of the human against the geometry of the object.”

Bio

Donald Sultan is an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker known for his striking still lifes and landscapes that blend abstraction and figuration. Born in Asheville, North Carolina, he studied at the University of North Carolina and the Art Institute of Chicago. Sultan’s work is distinguished by his use of industrial materials like vinyl, linoleum, and Masonite, layered with tar and rubber, which he manipulates to reveal textured surfaces beneath. This innovative approach creates a powerful minimalist aesthetic, balancing color, shape, and surface destruction. Since 1977, he has exhibited widely in major contemporary galleries around the world.
