Alberecht
Dürer
1471 – 1528
“Nature holds the beautiful, for the artist who has the insight to extract it. Thus, beauty lies even in humble, perhaps ugly things, and the ideal, which bypasses or improves on nature, may not be truly beautiful in the end.”
Bio
Albrecht Dürer is regarded as the greatest German Renaissance painter and printmaker. He is celebrated for his masterful engravings, woodcuts, and paintings that combined Northern European detail with Italian classical influence. Born in Nuremberg, Dürer trained as a goldsmith and painter before traveling to Italy, where he absorbed the ideals of humanism and perspective. His technical brilliance is evident in iconic prints like Melencolia I, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and Knight, Death, and the Devil. Dürer was also a prolific writer and theorist on proportion, perspective, and artistic practice, helping elevate the status of the artist as intellectual.
