Wassily
Kandinsky
1866 – 1944
“Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.”
Bio
Wassily Kandinsky was born on December 4, 1866, in Moscow. He is widely credited as a founder of abstract art. Originally trained in law and economics, he turned to painting in his 30s and studied in Munich, where he became involved with avant-garde groups and developed his early abstract style. He co-founded the influential Blue Rider group and later taught at the Bauhaus, where he shaped modern art through both teaching and theory. His work evolved from expressive landscapes to purely abstract compositions, emphasizing color and form as vehicles for spiritual expression. Forced into exile by the Nazis, Kandinsky spent his final years in France, where he continued to paint until his death.
